Tracking the Eastern Elk

Standing up to 60” at its shoulder height with antlers up to six feet long and weighing nearly 1000 pounds, the Eastern Elk was said to be even larger than its western cousin. In the mid-1800’s. the human population grew around the elk’s habitat and its numbers declined steadily until they were thought to have been driven to extinction. In this work, imprints of the Eastern Elk’s tracks are made across its native habitat.
